Today, I wanted to chat about a grooming technique that's truly a labour of love for our wire-haired friends: hand-stripping. It's a topic that sometimes raises questions, but I promise, with a gentle approach and a lot of understanding, you can make a more informed decision about if it is right for your wire haired dog.

What actually is hand stripping?

For many wire-haired breeds, like our spirited terriers and charming schnauzers, their coats are quite unique. They have a soft undercoat and a coarse, wiry topcoat. This outer layer is designed to protect them from the elements, almost like a natural, waterproof jacket! Over time, these wiry hairs mature and eventually die, but they don't always fall out on their own. That's where hand-stripping comes in.

Unlike clipping, which cuts both the dead and live hair, hand-stripping gently removes only the dead, ready-to-go hairs. This process encourages new, healthy, and vibrant wire hair to grow in its place.
