Isn't Market Harborough starting to look wonderful! As the days get longer and the daffodils start to peek through, we all love those invigorating spring walks. But let's be honest, those beautiful countryside strolls around Leicestershire often come with a rather muddy aftermath, don't they? Fear not, because I'm here to share some tips on how to keep your furry friends fresh and clean, even after the muddiest adventures!

Spring can be a glorious mix of sunshine and showers, which often means our beloved pups come home looking more like mud monsters than pampered pets. While a good roll in a puddle might be pure joy for them, it can be a bit of a headache for us! That's why a little proactive grooming can go a long way.
Alex's Top Tips for Tackling Spring Mud
1.The Pre-Walk Prep: Before you even step out, consider a paw balm. It creates a protective barrier, making mud and grit less likely to stick. For longer-haired breeds such as Bichon Frise or Toy Poodle, a quick trim of the hair in paw pads can also prevent mud from getting trapped between their pads. Although I have seen some Labrador Retrievers and Husky's with hairy paw pads in my time! Both of these are an option with my Bath and Brush and the paw pad trim is already included in my Full Groom

2.The Post-Walk Routine: Depending on your dog's coat type, it may be easier for you to wait for the mud to dry and then brush it out. This works on short-haired breeds such as Boxers, Dachshunds, Ridgebacks, Pugs, etc. But be careful, if you do this too many times as the skin isn't cleansed, they may start to smell, and you may run the risk of bacteria breeding in there. For longer coated dogs, you can rinse off the mud. But again, be careful that if you don't use a shampoo, the same still applies. For much longer-haired dogs or double-coated breeds, such as Cockapoos, Border Collies, Shih Tzus and Golden Retrievers, resist the urge to let them air dry if possible and be sure to brush them afterwards. Leaving them to air dry, or using a towel coat can cause matting and it will be uncomfortable to brush out.
3.Belly and Leg Washes: For dogs who love to get their tummies dirty, a gentle shampoo designed for dogs can work wonders. I always recommend using lukewarm water and making it a calm, positive experience. Remember, a happy dog makes for an easier dog-grooming session! In a Full Groom, I will (where applicable) take the belly and between the back legs shorter than the main coat to help make this less likely and then easier for you as owners to manage at home. We all know what a pulled muscle in our legs can feel like, now imagine that with matting in an intimate area, and your whole personality is to run everywhere. #

4.Regular Brushing: I am guilty of being bad at this, so I completely understand how this can feel easier to say than to do. Even if your Spaniel or Old English Sheepdog doesn't look muddy, regular brushing helps to remove loose dirt and prevent matting, especially in longer coats. It also stimulates their skin and distributes natural oils, keeping their coat healthy and shiny, so Labradors and Frenchie's don't get out of this just because they can't get mats.

We use high-quality, gentle products and ensure your dog feels comfortable and cared for throughout. It's not just about getting them clean; it's about maintaining their skin and coat health, and making sure they're happy and comfortable. Which is why a deshed is automatically added to breeds that benefit from this.
