"My dog is new or nervous" - you need an Introduction Session

This service is ideal for puppies, oldies, rescues and the nervous. Other groomers offer specific puppy grooms, but I have seen so many nervous rescue dogs or older dogs being groomed for the first time in a long time (or at all) that could do with a calmer introduction to the process. So I have rebranded the puppy groom to suit all newcomers. 

This includes a calm exploration of the space so that they have a better idea of where they are, a  bath with a double cleansing shampoo, a gently dry at their pace  (starting gentle and then getting up to full power depending on how tolerant they are), a brush through as tolerated, nail and paw pad trim as tolerated and then clearing of the hygiene areas and the eye corners as appropriate. 

This is for a maximum of an hour to avoid sensory overload.  

For puppies, it is ideal to have 2-3 of these sessions before their first Big Dog Groom. This is because they are most likely going to be expected to stand for 2 hours for their first session and will go into sensory overload and become overwhelmed. These sessions help teach them the expectations of being on the table and they will know what to expect next time. If they need to be clipped, in their final session we will work on clipper work and get them used to the sounds and vibrations of the clippers on various parts of their bodies, but without actually removing any hair. This will tell me if they are ready and lets them know that the sensations are not scary. 

All of the above is also relevant for rescue, nervous and old dogs. Age does not change the fact that they need an introduction to the process. It just means that they may need a little more support, both physically and emotionally. 

Regardless of age and need, I will give you honest feedback and help you with things you can try at home to reduce the stress levels. An open and honest conversation about how your dog behaves on the table means that you don’t get any surprises and we are focusing on the needs and welfare of the dog.
